O-I Glass (NYSE:OI) Faces Downgrade Amid Weak Earnings and European Challenges
- O-I Glass (NYSE:OI) received a downgrade from BNP Paribas to Neutral following a weak second-quarter earnings report that missed consensus estimates.
- The company reported second-quarter revenue of $1.67 billion, down 2.2% year over year, while adjusted earnings fell sharply to $0.09 per share.
- Investor concerns pushed shares of O-I Glass near a new 52-week low, reflecting weaker guidance and expectations for a slower recovery in Europe.
O-I Glass (NYSE:OI) is a global manufacturer of glass containers for food, beverage, wine, spirits, pharmaceutical, and personal care products. Following a weak earnings report, BNP Paribas downgraded O-I Glass to Neutral from Outperform and set a new price target of $8.50. At the time, this suggested modest upside from the stock’s price near $7.70.
The downgrade reflects the company’s recent financial performance. O-I Glass reported second-quarter adjusted earnings of $0.09 per share, down sharply from $0.53 per share a year earlier. This result missed analyst expectations, with Zacks reporting a negative earnings surprise of 59.09%.
Revenue for the quarter was $1.67 billion, down 2.2% from the same period last year. The company also continues to face profitability pressure, with recent net margin figures remaining negative. However, the negative net margin should be described carefully, as it can reflect restructuring charges, impairments, or other expenses rather than only normal operating costs.
The weak results were largely tied to challenges in Europe, including softer demand and operational issues. These headwinds offset stronger performance in the Americas, where sales rose to $949 million. Global shipments declined by about 4.5%, highlighting weaker volume trends across the business.
In response, O-I Glass lowered its 2026 outlook and realigned its 2027 adjusted EBITDA target to $1.2 billion to $1.3 billion, citing a more gradual recovery in Europe. The company said it remains focused on cost discipline, cash generation, and improving its earnings trajectory as market conditions stabilize.
The market reacted negatively to the news. Shares of O-I Glass fell near a new 52-week low, trading around $7.65 to $7.70 after the report. The stock remains well below its 52-week high of $16.91, reflecting investor concern over weak earnings, reduced guidance, and slower recovery expectations.
